Audubon International

Audubon International is a not for profit 501(c)(3) organization which engages businesses, communities, property managers, and individuals in voluntary, sustainable programs which promote environmental stewardship of private and publicly owned lands. The organization is best known for working with the golf industry and has enrolled more than 3,000 golf courses in its award-winning golf programs. A majority of courses listed on annual "best courses” lists maintain membership in Audubon International programs, including Pebble Beach, Bethpage Black, Pine Valley, Bandon Dunes, and Pacific Dunes. The organization has full commitment from several golf management companies, including TPC, Valleycrest, Billy Casper Golf, and Marriot Golf.

Below are descriptions of Audubon International’s programs for golf:

The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf is an education and certification program which guides golf courses to protect the environment and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf. By helping people enhance valuable natural areas and wildlife habitats on the course, improve efficiency, and minimize potentially harmful impacts of golf course operations, the program serves an important environmental role worldwide. Audubon International has developed Standard Environmental Management Practices that are generally applicable to all golf courses. These standards form the basis for ACSP for Golf certification guidelines. Golf courses work on the following elements to be certified:

  • Environmental Planning
  • Wildlife and Habitat Management
  • Chemical Use Reduction and Safety
  • Water Conservation
  • Water Quality Management
  • Outreach and Education

The Signature Program is an environmental and certification program created to help landowners and managers follow comprehensive sustainable resource management principles while designing, building, and managing properties. By working closely with planners, architects, managers, and key stakeholders, the Signature Program helps landowners and developers design for the environment so that both economic and environmental objectives are achieved and sustained in the long-term.
